We have had this Amana for many years and it has provided very good service. It is located in our attached garage. A couple of weeks ago I noticed some temperature variation in the freezer compartment.

I had a repair service come by to look at it. He said the compressor was wearing out and drawing too much current. He quoted me $650.00 for the repair. He also said that the older unit, like ours, were better built than the new units. He also stated that the bulk of his work is repair of fridges 16 months to 2 years old.

My questions are is the $650.00 quote realistic for a compressor replacement (we are in Denver)? Is he correct in has assessment of the quality of the newer appliances? $650.00 is better than $1200.00 for a new fridge but I don't want to have more problems in a year or two.

Thank you,
Wayne

These Amana's develope evaporator leaks that damage the compressor. Non-compressables get sucked in the compressor and raise the current draw.
It is not a good idea to fix this one: Leaks are hard to find and fix, and the cost is well over the value of this refrigerator. The cost is justified considering the high labor and materials plus a big fudg factor for the unknown problems. Even if you got it fixed, there is still a possability it would fail later. This is the main reason I would not repair this. If it was a GE, I would consider repair, but not Amana.
