I just got a Free Fridge from my neighbor. I’m going to put it in the garage to store beer and such. All the outlets are GFI protected, and when I plug the fridge it trips the GFI.

At this point I should say, I know some people think it isn’t wise to run a fridge on a GFI. Well I can’t argue much but I don’t want to run a new outlet, and I don’t plan to use the Freezer much.

I did try to by pass the GFI by using a 2-3 prong adapter with the ground floating… I don’t suggest that, it lead to me getting shocked… Kinda feels funny, well it wasn’t the first time…

So I decided to find the source of the problem. It turns out that the heater coil, for the defroster, is shorting voltage to ground, through the coil.

Is this a bad coil, or bad design?

Any suggestions on fixing the problem?

Replace the heater AP4069923. If you don't mind the gfi dropping out once in a while, then go with it. Refrigerators are prone to develope small leakage current due to contamination from food liquid spills. Pros say to avoid using a gfi with a fridg.
