Washer quit working yesterday in middle of wash cycle. (Never fails they'll be full of water when they quit...) Turned knob to spin, and lo and behold pump kicks on and drum spins. Any ideas?

Lift the washer up from the front and remove the belt. Check if the motor will run on the agitation cycle. If it'll then move the transmission pulley manually in both directions. Post your findings.

Sorry took so long to reply. Past weeks been pretty rough.
Did as you asked. Motor spins in "agitate." Tranny pulley turns with some "springy" resistance, like it wants to push back.
In meantime, have fixed old whirlpool- again. Fixed motor-trans. coupler in Jan. but broke a couple months later. (So I got Crosley.) Now when Whirl. is running, smell hot rubber. AAAARRRGH!!! Luckily, possibly, have newer Roper from friend, but aren't they made same as Whirl.?

Sounds like the tranny on the Crosley is gone bad.

About your Whirlpool - does it do anything else wrong besides this smell?

What is the model number of the Whirlpool washer?

model # LXR9245EQ1.
Problems? Other than second coupler in a few months, the inner tub always hangs to right about 2-3 inches, and I think timer may be bad, because in spin cycle tub will be spinning, then stop with a ka-chunk and then start a second later as timer advances. Think both issues contributing to coupler wearin out?

Remove the agitator and the inner tub. Check the drive block and the two tabs on top of the basket drive (#6 on the break down diagram).

If there is nothing wrong then the transmission is bad and has to be replaced.
