Freezer side is staying cold 0 degrees to 5 degrees on thermostat setting 5. Refrigerator side will cool to 40 degrees on thermostat setting 5. After a few days refrigerator side stops cooling. If you unplug the unit let it sit a while and plug it back in it starts to cool again.After a few days refrigerator stopped cooling again. Last night I removed back panel in freezer side and ice was covered on the evap coils. I defrosted the coils and the refrigerator side starts cooling again. Can this be caused by a bad control board or faulty defrost heater or defrost thermostat.

Most likely it is the defrost heater, you can easily see if the heater is bad by taking a continuity check of the heater, also at the top of the evap is a round disk, that is your termination thermostat, check if the blue top looks like it is pushed out of the housing. The heater is at the bottom of the evap and has a blue and pink wire attached to it.

I checked the defrost heater and it has no continuity through it. I will get a new defrost heater. The blue top on the thermostat looks ok. Should I replace the thermostat since I am replacing the defrost heater.
