I was given a used Frigidaire Freezer chest Model MFC05M0BW4. After cleaning out the chest I plugged the unit in to allow it to cool. The outside of the freezer is ‘HOT to the touch’ light an oven door. Is that normal and will it adjust and become cool on the outside after time? Or is that a motor issue and I should scrap the unit? Can it be repaired? The chest is cold and freezing (at least) water. Didn’t want to leave it running and start a fire while I am out of the house working. Thank you.

All the condensing coils are near the sides of the chest freezer. They should be hot over a large area, if not the unit may have refrigeration problems and just run all the time. Measure the internal temperature and post, should go down below say 10 degrees.

It is normal for the case to get warm/hot as this is where your condenser coils are. Once the unit reaches the set temperature (0 to 5 degrees F) and the compressor starts to cycle (just maintaining the temperature) it should cool down. Put a thermometer in it and check the temperature. If it is at the recommended temperature and the compressor is not cycling it could be that the thermostat (Item 21 in Section 2) contacts are welded together and it need replacing. Also if it goes below 0 F adjust the thermostat if it will not shut off the compressor then again the thermostat may be shot. Replacement parts for FRIGIDAIRE MFC05M0BW4 Frg(v0) / Freezer | AppliancePartsPros.comI would also check the lid seal to be sure it is not leaking. |
