I have an old oven that isn't working right. I'm pretty handy and can fix things myself but I don't know anything about ovens. When you turn the oven on it takes forever to get up to temp. Sometimes it seems it doesn't get up to temp at all. There is an aweful smell of gas. I'm not sure if it's as simple as the ignitor or if it could be something else. The most recent time I used it the temp went to 225 and stopped. I read somewhere that some ovens have a valve that as the temp increases it increases the gas flow. I usually light one of the burners and that seems to help. If it is the ignitor does anyone have instruction on how to replace it? I don't really need a step by step just a general idea where it is and how to change it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely the problem is a bad igniter (#16 on the diagram). You have to remove the oven floor and the bottom drawer to access it.
