Our freezer won't stop running, even if we slide the freezer control switch to the 'Off' setting. At first a couple of times of constant movement of the switch would cause it to stop but once it started again it wouldn't stop on it's own, reaching temperatures as low as -20ºF. Now we can't get it to stop at all without unplugging the unit. The refrigerator seems to be working fine, if a bit on the cool side due to the freezer. My thinking is that it's the freezer switch/sensor unit that is at fault but is there something else to check?

Thanks,
Ted

Here are your parts includes a wiring diagram
Replacement parts for MAYTAG MTB1956FEW Ref - Top Mount | AppliancePartsPros.com

Sounds like your thermostat (Item 10 in Section 2) is shot re: it's contacts have welded together.

Unplug the unit and undo one of the wires going to it.
Plug the unit back in if it does not start up then dollars to donuts that is your problem.

Thank-you for the suggestions. I ordered and received the part today (a day earlier then expected!!). Ten minutes later our freezer was working fine once more. Thanks again for the help and service. Great site!

You are welcome

And thanks for getting back to us. Now when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause.
