My microwave stopped heating and has an awful, chemical smell going when I tried to heat up some food this morning. The fan still works as does the turntable and light. Any ideas on how/what I should look for to fix it? Thanks.

Does it make any unusual noises?

No. No noises. Everything is the same, just without heat and a funny smell.

Set the microwave on defrost for a minute and listen to it.

If you can hear when the signal to the high voltage side is going "on" and "off", then the problem is a bad magnetron tube.

If the microwave is less then ten years old - the part is still under the limited manufacturer warranty.

- The part number for the magnetron tube is AP2025937

- Here are the break down diagrams for the GE microwave Model JVM1850CD002

Good luck and Happy New year.

I have the same thing, but I do have a loud buzzing/cracking sound. Not sure if it's heating up or not because I turn it off before something else happens. Could this be the magnetron as well?

Thanks for the help.

Most likely the magnetron has gone bad and could cause damage to the high voltage diode. Check the high voltage diode as described here. Do not forget to discharge the high voltage capacitor first (the instructions in the above link).

- The part number for the magnetron is AP2025937

- The part number for the high voltage diode is AP2026385
