Daughter was using machine and noticed the clothes would not agitate on wash cycle, so she tugged at agitator and it came up out of washer with the shaft attached. Water entered the shaft opening and grease entered the washer tub. Is there a part that secures the shaft in the transmission hub? Could it have been out of the cog that it fits into while it was not wanting to agitate? I have checked the parts diagram and am not sure what it needs. Has the transmission been damaged by having water go into that area?

The clip on the transmission is broken #16 on the transmission parts breakdown (part number 22002340). Because water has entered the transmission you need to drain the transmission and refill it with new grease (part number Y056080). To drain the transmission lean the washer all the way back and turn the transmission so that the cover points straight up. Remove the cover and drain the grease I always catch it with a large trash bag. When you reinstall the cover you need to use the gasket maker that car mechanics use to make gaskets for oil pans. Wow, I'm having to digest all of this! I'm not familiar with gasket making! The clip (#16), does it connect the shaft to the housing, or does it go in the housing? Was the damage to the clip caused by things (apron strings, straps, loops, etc) getting caught under the agitator and then using force to free them?

This is sort of a big job you will have to remove the spin basket to access the clip but no it’s not inside the transmission. Making that gasket is done by simply putting a bead of that gasket maker where the gasket should be. You might can get by without draining the transmission but I recommend doing it.
