My icemaker makes the first 3-4 cubes then the other 2-3 slots remained empty. it seemed to take longer for the ice to dispense from the tray into the bin, too. So I am wondering if it is the water valve causing the problem or is it the icemaker itself? Before I order parts it would be nice to have some idea. thanks

Sounds like you're not getting enough water. Could be because of water pressure, blockage in the line, stopped up wire screen in the water supply line where it hooks to water inlet valve. Some ice makers have an adjustment behind the plastic end cover. Look for the +/- on and adjustment.

but the amount of water would not cause the icemaker to not dispense the ice into the bin? would it?

I'm not too sure about that. I know that some won't run through the cycle unless there is ice in the mold. Perhaps it needs to be full to trigger the sensor.
