Very reliable fridge, hate to discard if repairable. Stropped cooling, but would run intermittently, now, not at all. Relay is old electromagnet style, rattles correctly and ohms open with top up, closed with top rotated down, like it should. Resistance across overload protector. Seems unlikely to be start relay. Temp control would turn off compressor if defective, am I correct? But I can feel a click when I rotate the switch. Is there a way to bypass the switch temporarily just to see if the compressor will start? Is there away to test the temp control?
Will the defrost timer shut off the compressor if defective? I can push on the center screw adjuster of the defrost timer and the evap freezer fan starts for a moment. I can rotate the center timer adjuster and the fan starts, but only runs for a minute, I guess because there is nothing to defrost. Is the defrost timer unlikely to be at fault?

Rleescott, the temperature control would stop the fans and the compressor if it is not closing the internal contacts properly. The defrost timer will also do the same. If the fans and compressor kick on at the same time for that short period, it is unlikely that the fans or compressor have failed. With the power cord unplugged, the cold control thermostat WP819470 would need to be tested for continuity. If it does not have continuity, it would need to be replaced. If it does have continuity, the defrost timer W10822278 would be the likely cause of failure.

thanks for the reply. I am trying the defrost timer first, since it is cheaper.Any chance you can advise as to which terminal to attach the black wire?

If there is a white wire going to the defrost timer, the black jumper will connect to terminal 1. If there is not a white wire going to the defrost timer, the black jumper will go to terminal 2.

Removed old timer. By research I found that terminal 1 and 4 control the compressor( too bad I didn't know that sooner). With the old timer in the run mode there is continuity of term 1and4 and it is open in the defrost mode. This is normal, so my hope that these terminals were fused open was out the window. Installed the new timer after ohming it to be properly operational and turning the shaft to verify proper run position, still no compressor run. Went to the compressor cap to check voltage, tapped the cap, and the compressor started. Has run perfectly for 3 days. Go figure?!
