We have a 9 year old Kenmore Residential Dryer (417.88042700) and sometimes it will heat up, but most of the time, it won't. When there is heat, you'll see a red/orange glow in the back and when there is no heat, you won't see that glow. It works perfectly, except for the heat issue. Do you know what it could be? Thanks so much, appreciate any advice!

It may be as simple as the heating element going bad or it might be a relay on the electronic control board going bad. There are several other items that it could be. Are you up for some detective work? You will need to disassemble the machine and you will need a multi-meter to perform some tests.

It could be as simple as the plug and/or outlet being loose, wiggle it around and see if the situation changes. Or unplug and look for burns on either hot leg of the plug that indicate arcing. The hot legs are the straight ones on 3 and 4 wire plugs. Barring that brobriffin is right, you'll need to do some electrical detective work.
