Dry and HOT leads me to believe its not cycling the heating element off. Thus it is overheating and blowing the thermostat.
If so the control board will need replaced if the thermister is working properly.

Having said that it may be the heating element and other parts may fit in your old one causing it to work.. Who knows?
Most Whirlpool parts are interchangeable.
