LG refrigerator stopped cooling. Now when I plug in the unit, the fans in the freezer and refrigerator come on, but the compressor doesn't start. I hear a click and it sounds like the compressor is trying to come on, but after a few seconds it clicks off. Could this be a bad capacitor?

Its probably a bad start relay or a bad compressor.

Thanks for your assessment. Is there a way to test the system and determine which it is,

Thanks. Is there a way to test the system and determine which is the problem, or should I just replace the starter relay and see if that fixes it? I assume I should not use a 3 and 1 device. Thank again for your help with this.

You can ohm out the compressor pins. There are two across from each other and one by itself. Ohm from each of the two to the one. Also ohm from each pin to the compressor itself. If it all checks out ok, replace the relay.
