Hello all,
New on this forum and have a GE refrigerator PSS26NSTASS side by side that is making clicking noises but won't start the compressor. I can sometimes get is started by unplugging and plugging it back on after 5 minutes or so.

I Called for service and the tech said that it was the compressor without even checking it because it was hot according to him. (the refrigerator was working while he said this).

Last night I got home and it wasn't working anymore so I unplugged it like I would normally do, wait a while and then plug it back in. This time and since, only the light is working. No fans inside are working, nothing. The panel where the temperature would show was flashing "hrs" only. Nothing else. This morning not even the hrs is flashing.

I took off the cover to see the board. No black spots anywhere to be found. Took off the starter relay and it rattles.

Call the tech on the phone and told him nothing was working and if it was possibly the board that was bad. He said it didn't matter because that board has nothing to do with the compressor because it is before it.

So before I spend 2k on a new one, I am checking with the bright minds here first. Is this tech right or is he pulling my leg?

Thank You

Sounds like the tech doesn't want your money. Also, the board supplies power to the compressor, so he may just not know how they work. Do you own an ohm meter? If so, you can take the start relay off, ohm the two pins across from each other one by one to the single pin. Then ohm each one to the case of the compressor. I believe it is likely the start relay is bad. Generally, a GE with just lights on needs a board. You said you looked at the board, but did u take it out and look at the back side of it? That's where they burn out. Let me know what you find.

Thank You for your reply cbmserviceguy.

I had actually ordered the main board, start relay and the run capacitor from here by the time I got your answer. Here is what I noticed.

1. Figured that the start relay was bad because it rattled. New one rattled just as much so it was probably fine.Changed it anyway.

2. Changed the run capacitor because while ordering the start relay I came across this part and it said the refrigerator would not start if this bad even if the start relay was good. So for the $17 extra I figured why not.

3. And finally the main board. It showed no signs of any burned out circuit anywhere. Replaced this as well and plugged it in.

Happy to say that everything works including the ice dispenser that had stopped working about a year ago. I would say that I only needed the main board.

Kudos to this site for the great information it contains. I learned a lot from the valuable responses within. Hope my experience helps someone else in the future.

Again, Thanks to all
