During normal operation ice in the ice maker tray starts to melt and items on the top shelf get soft. A huge icicle will form in the freezer. If I select the Quick ice feature everything is ok until quick ice times out, then things start to melt again. When I'm in quick ice mode with the door open I can press the door switch and the evaporator fan usually turns on. When quick ice is not selected and I press the door button the evaporator fan does not turn on. I submitted a question a while back and someone told me to "check the thermistors". I replaced the thermistor on the evaporator coil and it did not fix the problem.
Is there another thermistor associated with the evaporator fan that I should check? If not, can someone give me some advice?

Is there any frost on the back wall? Was the evaporator frosted up when you replaced the thermistor? Is the condenser fan running?

There is no frost on the back wall and the evaporator was not frosted up. I'm not sure about the fan at that time since I had power off. However, the fan doesn't seem to be running if I haven't selected "quick ice" function, and things in the top start to thaw. As long as "quick ice" is selected the fan runs and everything stays frozen. It seems to me that the "quick ice" function forces the fan on until the function times out. I was wondering if there is some other thermistor other than the one mounted to the evaporator coil. I hate to replace the control board and/or fan if I'm not sure they are bad.

There is another thermistor behind a small oval grill in the freezer section. You can check it for ohms and see what you come up with. There best way is to place it in an ice bath and read the ohms, then compare that to a chart to see where it should read. Is the condenser fan behind the unit by the compressor running when the compressor is running?

If this termistor is bad will it cause the evaporator fan not to run? I'm not absolutely sure but I believe the condenser fan is running. I'll try to catch it the next time the compressor comes on and see if it is running. The freezer temperature readout stays at 0 degrees and everything in the bottom two thirds of the freezer is fine. Only things in the top of the freezer start to get soft. If I remember to push the quick ice button to turn it back on when it goes off everything is fine. Thanks for your quick response by the way.

The thermistor can influence the fan running yes. The fan is supplied power by the control board. The board makes the decision as to when it should run and when it shouldn't. If you ohm out the thermistors you can determine if they are good or not. GE has a history of control board issues, so I'm leaning towards that personally, but I would check the thermistors.

I'll check the thermistors and if they're OK, I'll order a control board. It'll probably be the weekend before I get a chance. Thanks for your help.
