If replacing the MCU hasn't resolved the problem there may be an issue with your wiring harness. The ends may be corroded, abraded or tarnished causing the error. Just to rule out the wiring connectors try to clean the connectors with a cleaner. Clean all connections to and from the user interface and the main control board as well as to and from the motor control unit.
See pic as example.

I cleaned all the connections to the MCU and CCU with contact cleaner. Now with the original CCU I get the same result as before when I run "Drain and Spin". The unit runs without error indications. The function does not complete. The timer display starts at 13, indexes to 12 and stays there for as long as one allows it to run. The drum turns at two levels of low speed, periodically reversing direction. The sequence repeats over and over but does nothing else.

I removed the original CCU and connected the new CCU. The result is like before with _ . _ sound and F99 display. I note that the software version of the original is Rev B. while the new CCU is Rev C. Could this cause an issue interfacing with the UI?

Very likely you will need to located a revision B CCU. That F99 code points to a mismatch between the CCU and UI. And your old CCU is just bad!
Like trying to install Windows 10 on a Commodore 64.
