I have an old clothes drier. It stopped heating, but not tumbling, so I think the problem is the heating element. I'd rather replace it myself than pay a repairman to do it.

But when I looked on the back of it, there wasn't anything that said what the drier model is. (There are just two labels, one warning that the drier has to be properly grounded, the other stating

the drier's minimum required clearances.)

I think that the top of the drier may lift upward, and that the model number may be written under there, but I don't know how to lift the top.

I've attached two photos of the drier here.

Does anyone know what model of Maytag this drier is, or failing that, how to swing the top upwards (if I'm right that it does that)?

Typically the dryer model info is on the front panel that is readable when you open the door. Some dryers also had a decal on the back with the model info but not very many. You may need to open this model up completely to troubleshoot it including removal of the drum for easier access to some of the components. Based on the photos the front panel should be removeable by removing 2 screws near the bottom and then swinging it out at an angle . Use care to remove the door switch wires. After you get it off you will likely have to take out 2 more screws on the top inside corners at the front to tip/lift the top up and rotate it backwards. This should give you access to just about everything that is not under the control panel or the back cover.

OK, I found the model number on the front panel when I opened the door - it's DE4000.

Doing a search on 'Maytag drier DE4000 "heating element" ', I pulled up the Repair ************ website's page Maytag Dryer Parts

Under Maytag Dryer Heating Element, it says "If your dryer does not heat first check for a blown thermal fuse on the blower housing before replacing the heating element."

But under Maytag Dryer Thermal Fuse, it says "If the thermal fuse has blown, the dryer won't start."

So now I'm confused - the drier starts in the sense that the drum rotates, but it doesn't heat up.

So which is it - if the thermal fuse has blown, will the dryer not start at all, including the motor that spins the drum, or will just the heating element not turn on?

Well, I see that this website will let me embed a link, but that it won't actually show up in my post. My apologies, it's not my fault.

Well you are making progress. The thermal fuse is one of several safeguards built into the control wiring. If the drum turns but you fail to get heat most if not all of these devices are OK. The next item to check is the heating element. You will need a meter to check for continuity. Pull off one of the wires and check it for proper continuity and/or a ground to the housing. This is the usual problem on an electric dryer with a complaint of no heat. BTW there should be a paper copy of the schematic inside the back of the control panel that will help you troubleshoot the dryer.
