The freezer stopped freezing (we are not using the icemaker). Then fridge stopped cooling. After a day, it started cooling again, and then a day later, it stopped working completely. The power is on and lights work, etc.
Is it the compressor, the thermostat, which thermostat and if so what parts are needed?

Are the fans inside the freezer and on the back of the refrigerator working?

How hot is the compressor on touch?

Does the compressor vibrate?

Gene.

It could be a faulty defrost timer. The defrost timer switches the refrigerator between normal cooling mode and defrost mode about every 6-12 hours. Most energy saving models run the timer only when the compressor runs; if the compressor runs continuously, defrost cycles occur at roughly 6 hour intervals. If the door is kept shut and the compressor runs less frequently, the defrost cycle may occur only once per day. The defrost cycle lasts about 30 minutes. If it goes longer than that, it's possible that the timer motor is sticking. If the refrigerator doesn't start up for a long time after the defrost cycle is over, it's possible that the electrical contacts are pitted and close to complete failure.

Next time it fails, tell us what is running/not running, or completely dead.
