I have a 10yr old whirlpool side by side refrigerator (Model ED5FHEXSB00). I've started to notice sometimes I open my freezer to find everything is thawed. The fridge is still cool but not a cold as is should be. The compressor is not running and no fans are running. If I adjust the fridge thermostat up and down the compressor will kick back on and everything will be ok for a few hours or a day, then it will happen again.

All coils are free of dust, the fans that cool the compressor seems to run fine. I just replaced the defrost thermostat and I'm still having the issue.

Do you think it's the fridge thermostat that's bad or do you think it's getting stuck in auto defrost mode and I would need to replace that board?

Sounds like a bad refrigerator thermostat or sometimes called a cold control. Only if in the freezer it's frosted over on the back wall will you normally have a defrost issue.
