Son's side-by-side ref-freezer fails to freeze intermittently past several months. Now apparently a hard failure. Cold both sides, but not frozen. Control panel seems to function ok to external appearances, compressor runs continuously. airflow in freezer side seems a little weak, but not sure. Evap fan maybe?

You want to open the back wall on the freezer and make sure it has a completely even frost pattern. On all the evaporator coils if fan is running and blowing air that should be good enough but also if it's completely frosted over then your gonna have a defrost issue to test for

No frost except a few inches at entry from compressor. Exit air at top ~ 46-48 degrees F. Seems to be in permanent defrost. Compressor and fan still running continuously. How can I disable defrost to see?

Noticed the defrost seemed to cease after all. Will clean condenser coils and airway and get back.

So it's frosted on evaporator but only a couple inches? That is a sealed system leak. Not enough refrigerant left in the machine to keep things cold. Unfortunately that normally spells the end of your refrigerator as it can cost about 800 bucks to find and fix the leak. This action if done should be serviced by a professional who is certified in refrigerant recovery.

More observation and cleaning today, and I'm afraid you are correct. Not enough refrigerant in the system. Looks like a new unit is in the offing. Thanks for the feedback.
