*squealing noise (in title)
(2 belt washer) Fills with water but won't agitate. Agitator moves slightly, and even moves ever so slightly in reverse too. Produces a high squealing noise after running for a bit; it sounds like the belt is slipping - checked the belts which appear to be fine and at proper tension; not sure if they need to be replaced though. Any ideas on problem and how to repair would be greatly appreciated.

I have just been given as free a Maytag washer model number LAT9356AAE with a similar problem . According to the owner who gave it away instead of trying to get it fixed it will agitate the clothes but will not spin the water out. I need advice on this model as to whether it can be repaired as a decent cost. It looks good and the transmission seems OK.

Checked this unit more and do not find a problem with the belts or drain pump. It will agitate and drain but will not spin . Took the inner tub out and did not find any problem such as a piece of clothing in the gap area. The main shaft pulley on the bottom turns easy and the motor slides easily on the glides. I tried to turn the transmission assembly by hand and could just barely turn it with 2 hands. There is a lot of black residue on the inside of the panels. I was expecting to have to replace the bearings but it appears to have a transmission problem which is more money than what this unit is worth. Advice is requested for continued work on this unit.
