GE washer won't spin, smells like burning rubber

Likely cause: overloading (Daughter "cleaned her room" while we were on vacation and did a truckload of laundry...)
Symptoms: Started leaving clothes wet after spin cycle, then got progressively worse, to where it will no longer spin except when empty, gives off acrid smell like hot rubber.
Where should I start to troubleshoot?
