I just successfully replaced the agitator dogs on a 1990s Whirlpool Thin Twin stacked W/D, but I ran into a problem when putting the dust cap back on.

The little clamps beneath the dust cap will not attach to the agitator innards when the washer is on the dust cap. It's as if the washer is too thick. Any time I put the dust cap back in, it doesn't fit correctly and the top part of the agitator won't turn properly.

If I put the dust cap in without the washer, it clamps right in and the top agitator rotates just fine. But I need to install it with the washer!

What should I do about this? Is it possible to get a washer with the same diameter, albeit somewhat less thick? Is this a common problem?

Here is a picture of the dust cap and washer:

That is a gasket which is necessary to keep water from getting into the agitator. Not sure how necessary it is, but it should go on with no problem, just jam it down. If you are concerned though order a new cap, not expensive.
