The washer fills, spins, and drains fine but it only agitates in a counter-clockwise direction which causes laundry to wrap around the agitator. The direct drive coupling appeared to be shot and was replaced, it did not affect the agitation problem.
The agitator shaft does agitate properly with the agitator assembly removed, the problem only seems to occur with the agitator installed. I did mark the bolt at the top of the agitator to insure it wasn't the assembly moving on the shaft. The shaft itself only spins in one direction with the agitator assembly installed.
I suspect the transmission is failing under the load that exists with the agitator installed, but I hesitate to invest in a new one without being certain.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Well first try replacing the dogs. They can be worn without visible indications.
If you want to try replacing the transmission after that you can buy from this site and return it if it does not fix the problem. But given the age a new machine might be the better choice.

Thanks for the feedback, the return policy is good to know. I'm leaning toward a new machine, it's due I think.
