I have a GE Profile where the float switch seems to have a short somewhere. The washer would not fill. Tested the water inlet valve and it has continuity. Removed the flood float switch. The switch is getting 118.7 volts. But the water inlet is not getting any. I replaced the float switch and when I hit the start button, it popped. What would have caused this to happen? Did I have the wrong float switch?

Could be as you said that the water valve is shorted out

I cannot say as I do not know what switch you used.
But if it was a float switch from any unit it should be able to handle the current to run a water valve.
