My start button started to act weird a couple days ago. I had to kind of play with the button to get it to start and now it won't work at all. I know it's either the control panel or the touch pad itself. I'm thinking it's the touch pad since all the other buttons work expect the start and cancel button. I just wanted some thoughts on this.

Here are your parts
Parts for Maytag MDB7609AWB2 Dishwasher - AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a link to the tech sheet.
It is too big to be able to upload it to this site so I have had to use another site.
Download MDB7609.pdf
Uncheck "Download with Secured Download manager"
Then use the light grey Download button.
This should ensure that you do not download any software that you do not want on your computer.

The usual way to check the panel is to use a meter on the control pane pinouts to check the individual keys.

Note that the control panel is the keypad.
The other part is the control board (electronic control).

I do agree with you that in your case the control panel is the most likely culprit as playing with the button will start it.
