Four year old Whirlpool Gold dishwasher. Opened the dishwasher Monday morning and the dishes were dirty, so I reran a couple of times.
After doing some testing and reading up on it, I think my circulation pump may be fried, but thought it worth checking if there were alternatives.
The washer fills and drains properly. During the wash cycle, I do hear a humming under the kickplate (which does sound like it is coming from the pump). However, water doesn't move and the arms don't turn.
I think my pump is fried, but I'm hesitant to have a tech come check ($75) and think about replacing the pump ($189 in Canada for the part alone) as opposed to cutting my losses and getting a new D/W.
Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I would pull the pump just to be sure something is not jamming the impeller. |

Thanks. I pulled the pump. Impeller spins easily and there's nothing inside. Pretty sure its fried, though no guarantee there isn't something else.
Question is on a 4 year old dishwasher, what else is likely to go wrong. Debating whether to just replace the pump or go new...

Debating whether to just replace the pump or go new... That is a question that only you can answer. It depends on how satisfied you are with this unit, what a replacement unit will cost, what kind of shape the unit is in etc.
As far as what else can go wrong. Other things that fail on many units are the control panel, the control board, the drain pump and the soap dispenser. I cannot say what the likelihood of any of these failing in the next five years. It is a gamble but the same gamble applies to a new unit. |
