I have a Kenmore top-freezer refrigerator that's about 8 years old and has started to cool only intermittently. Sometimes things in the freezer will be fully frozen for a few days, but then seemingly randomly it will stop cooling properly for days and everything will thaw out. It still kicks on and tries to cool, but the compressor gets insanely hot and I suspect that it's turning off to keep it from overheating.
I've tried unplugging it to let it thaw out, and I've tried vacuuming out the coils and neither has worked. Any idea what might cause this?

A model number would be helpful. Find your model number - AppliancePartsPros.comI am assuming that when it does get too warm the compressor comes on and stays on except when the unit goes through a defrost cycle. I've tried unplugging it to let it thaw out, How lon http://www.appliancepart...odelnumber_locator.aspxg did you leave it unplugged and did you empty it out and leave the freezer door open? Does the unit have a condenser/compressor fan? Does it fix itself after a couple days or does it run OK for a couple days after you defrost it? Any idea what might cause this? Could be a sealed system problem or a defrost problem. Check that the evaporator/freezer fan is running. It should be on whenever the compressor is on. When it happens again remove the rear cover in the freezer and check the evaporator coils. if they are heavily iced/frosted over then it is a defrost problem. |
