My gas range was purchased by the previous owner 10.5 years ago. The stove top units all work fine, however whenever I try to bake something the oven either fails to heat up at all, or doesn't reach the desired temperature. I have also been smelling a gas smell lately. In doing some research it appears that the problem is the oven igniter part which will have to be replaced. I wanted to see if my assumptions were correct, and if so, I found similar new units for sale for $500. Am i better off just buying a new range?

Am i better off just buying a new range? on gas ranges there are two types of ignitors; Piezo electric or glow model. On older models like your's it's a glow element; they are about 30 or so dollars and 15 minutes to install. They can go bad quickly or intermittently. All of them have safety switches that shut off the gas if no heat is sensed. I'd try it for 30 or so, but if you have intermittent temps on the oven too, it could be a combination of a thermostat/ board and ignitor. I'm cheap so I'd buy a hundred dollars in parts before I spend 500 for another one unless yours is beat up. IF it is, put it on craigslist for a hundred with caveat that it needs a new ignitor. my 2 cents
