French door, bottom freezer. Was still making ice ~3 weeks ago. Freezer temp ~20 F running constantly probably. Noticed some ice/frost on freezer back wall earlier in the week. Replaced defrost thermostat last night but things did not improve. Just checked and saw 18 F for code air coming out of vent in freezer. Fridge part cold at ~37 (the setting). Thank for all help.

It did stop running not long ago. It was quiet (defrosting?) for a long while and then it started to run again. Why freezer temp does not go down below 20 F or so?

Here are your parts Parts for Kenmore Refrigerator 79577306600 - AppliancePartsPros.comSears have actual part breakdown diagrams but they do not share these with other vendors. Below is a link to a manual. You will have to join the site and be logged in to be able to download it. http://appliancejunk.com...e&id=48;t=1438939669I may not be much help to you, sorry. I can tell you that the unit is a LG. I do not have a cross reference of Sears to LG model numbers so am guessing that the manual is a close match to your unit just by comparing what the part breakdowns look like. Double check that the compressor is running all the time. You can usually hear it but also should be able to feel it vibrating. Check that the evaporator/freezer fan is running. Check that the condenser/compressor fan is running. Check that the vent on the kick plate and rear cover are clean. Also that the condenser coils are clean. If all the above are OK then remove the rear cover in the freezer and check the evaporator coils. If they are heavily iced/frosted over you have a defrost problem. If they just have frost in one area usually where the freon enter the coils you have a sealed system problem. |

Thank you, Denman. I finally opened freezer back wall again and took photos. Since temperature had been ~20F there was not a lot of frost, which was not even. See attachments.

Everything is clean/running and seems normal, except for freezer not cold enough.

Is the compressor running all the time except when the unit goes through a defrost cycle.
The pictures look like there is a sealed system problem.
But it is important that the compressor run for about half an hour before checking the evaporator oils. If you check them during or shortly after a defrost cycle then you could come to the wrong conclusion. |

I'd think compressor had been running before I took the photos. I've not been around all the time but have not seen a really quiet cycle lately. There's not much frost to defrost, right?
What's really a sealed system problem? Freon leaking? Not worth fixing, right?
Thanks again.

A sealed system can be low freon or a bad compressor. Both are expensive repairs and often it makes more sense to put the dollars towards a new unit |
