I only have frost building on 1/3 of my evap coil. Compressor is obviously running. Can it be a "weak or dying" compressor instead of low refrigerant ? How can a sealed system lose refrigerant without a leak ?

Hi.

The incomplete frost coverage of the evaporator could be caused by low freon charge (leak) or inefficient compressor. To determine which one is it the sealed system has to be pierced and a service port installed to check the freon pressure.

Thank you,

Simon.

Leaks are not always visible or apparent. Most of the time the evaporator will be only partially frosted when the system is low on coolant.
Compressor will usually make noise when going out. Compressor will outlast the charge many times.
