My trusty Whirlpool refrig/freezer stop running suddenly. Power is present - the interior lights work. No foul odors. I replaced the defrost timer and can hear the defrost coil actuate when I turn the timer screw/gear. There is no sound at all from the compressor.

How can I tell if there is a defect in the compressor circuit breaker/overload protector or compressor motor starter or the compressor itself? I hav a mult-itest meter. I have unplugged and replugged the unit and nothing changes. Thank you.

Here are your parts
Parts for Whirlpool ED22DQXAW00 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for the tech sheet.

Are the condenser/compressor fan and the evaporator/freezer fan running?

If not then the problem could be that you are in a defrost cycle or the main control thermostat's contacts are not closing.

If yes then see the below link with info on how to check the compressor etc.

Note that the compressor continuity and grounded winding tests can tell you that the compressor is bad. They do not tell you that the compressor is good as it may have other internal problems.

Also there is not a good way to check the PTC starter so the norm is if the compressor checks out OK replace it and see what happens.

Thanks for the quick response. I replaced the defrost timer to no avail. Then I pulled off the shield to expose the compressor,(the floor was scorched under the compressor. The fan to cool the compressor was frozen. The compressor had been so hot that the solder on the copper fill tube on the compressor had melted. The cost to repair this fridge which was made in 1992 does not make sense. Compressor(most likely), fan, and relays/cap/water tubing/wiring will at a minimum will all have to be replaced. Time to recycle.
Thanks again for your help. JRA

Sorry to hear that it is not fixable.

But you were lucky that it did not start a fire.

There must have also been a problem with the thermal overload/cutout on the unit as it never should have been able to get hot enough to melt solder.

And thanks for getting back to us.
Now when others search for a similar problem they will see a very infrequent but still possible problem and your post may help someone else avoid a fire.
