In december last year, the transmission was trying to spin and agitate at the same time so i replaced the transmission. shortly after that, a knocking sound started each time it starts to spin in either drain or spin cycles. the knocking sound diminishes as the speed increases. Here lately, sometimes the transmission won't come out of agitate mode automatically, you have to stop it and then restart the cycle and then you hear the thump of the transmission shifting gears. this weekend, the rpm's started reducing significantly during the spin cycle, then you could hear the motor loading up, and then clicking sound begins. a hot rubber smell is noticble too. i was thinking that the timer was bad in that it was sending two speed signals at one time which had happened before several years ago. i replaced the timer but the issues remained.
what's going on?

Well, it's impossible for the transmission to operate in agitate and spin modes at the same time. There is no "shifting" of gears in the transmission. The drive motor drives the transmission input shaft in one direction for agitation and in the opposite direction for spin. Not really sure what's going on here. In order for the washer to go from agitate to drain/spin, the motor must stop first and then start again in the opposite direction. This is accomplished by timer action but you have replaced that. One thing you must be sure to do which DIY'ers fail to do all the time is that whenever the transmission is pulled, you must reseat the basket drive before replacing the transmission. You do this by grabbing the brake cam driver by hand, and rotating it CCW while pushing upwards. This releases the brakes and allows the basket drive to go fully up into the brake drum. Most of the time when you pull the transmission, the basket drive will drop just a little bit and you must get it back in all the way before putting the transmission back in. That may be your problem. You may also have a faulty speed switch which is trying to apply power to both motor run windings at the same time.

i replaced the transmission because of an oil slick below it (you could see where it leaked by the vertical shaft). i did as you told with the brake. i plugged it in and all i got was a hum from the motor. i then replaced by motor and now it works close to new. it still won't always spin during the drain cycle. if you open/close the lid or push/pull the timer knob, you can here the transmission clunk and the tub starts spinning. runs much quieter now.

It's not supposed to spin during the first 2 minutes of the drain/spin cycle. After agitation stops, it should drain only for 2 full minutes, then the motor stops and then starts again. This takes the transmission out of neutral at which point it will start spinning while continuing to drain. You are pausing the motor manually when you open/close the lid or cycle the timer on/off.
