During agitation cycle only. There is a loud knocking noise that reminds me of the sound automotive engine makes when a pinion rod goes bad. What is this problem and how or what do I need to do to correct. thank you

Operate it with the front panel off and see if you can locate the source of hte noise. Most likely it is in the transmission, and in that case given the age of the machnine replacing the unit is probably the best alternative.
