:) Hello all -

I have an old upright freezer, has lasted me through 20 years of deer seasons, etc. It is a frost free model, or at least it is supposed to be. Just last week, I opened it and everything was thawing out. It was running and the air felt sort of cold, but not really really cold to freeze. I had to unload it and let it stand for a few days. Hopefully, I can fix it. I THINK, but don't know that maybe the temperature control, defrost heater, or bi-metal, may be part of the problem. If it is any of these than I can fix it. If it is the compressor gas leaking out then I will let it go to freezer heaven. Questions: With a digital multimeter, does just plain continuity on the temperature control mean it is good? How do I check the heater and the bi-metal? Also, the temperature control is fitted down the side through a plastic tube. Looks to be about 1/4" and is buried inside the wall of the freezer. Is this tube secure enough for me to pull the temperature control out and then get a new one back through it OK, or, do I need to use a fish line or something like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated. God Bless!! :)

Hello baystuff55. The heater and the defrost thermostat and the cold control will read closed for continuity. However, the defrost thermostat has to be cold when testing it. If the cold control is bad, you will need to fish the cap tube down the opening.

If the compressor is running which from your post it sounds like it was then it will not be a thermostat problem.

Could be either a sealed system or a defrost problem.

First check to be sure the compressor is running.
When the freezer fan is on the compressor should be on as they are wired in parallel.
You can usually hear the compressor but also should be able to feel it vibrating.

If it is on let the unit run for a few hours.
Then unplug it, remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.

If there is only frost in one area, usually where the freon enters the coils then it is a sealed system problem.
See the example picture about half way down the page at the following link.

If the coils have a fairly even coating of frost then it may be a defrost problem. Replace the cover and let it run a couple days to see if the coils will clog up with ice/frost.
If they do then get back to us for how to check the defrost system.

Do not let the coils defrost as they must be frozen to easily check the defrost.

Also try to be sure the compressor has run constantly for at least an hour before checking the coils. If you check during or shortly after a defrost cycle you may end up with the wrong diagnosis.

Mr. Denman: Ran the freezer all day as I went to work. When I came home, the inside is blowing warm air. I pulled it out from the wall and touched the compressor and it is humming and a little hot, but not like burning hot. I slapped the compressor and I can hear what sounds like a big marble running around a ceramic bowl or something like that. So I shook the compressor and it started to shake and rattle with that sound like is was going to start up or something and then it dies down. I don't think it is working right. Is this a lost cause?

Yes from your description I would say that the compressor is toast.

Probably best to replace the freezer as a compressor replacement would be an expensive repair.
