I have a Hotpoint dishwasher, and the air gap just started spewing water all over the counter top. The dishwasher is less than 5 years old, is it already going out?

No
Odds are good that you have a partial plug in the drain under the sink.
Undo the drain where it hooks onto the house drain system often crud gets caught here and builds up over time.
Also the air gap may need cleaning.
