Old dryer finally died. When you hit the start switch it tries to start but makes loud noise and won't keep running. Belt looks good. I unhooked the belt and the unit starts without the belt attached and sounds fine. I'm thinking one of the bearings but which one? When I turn the drum by hand it seems to turn pretty smoothly.
Don't want to order wrong part.
I'm pretty good with a Fridge but this is my first dryer.
Any help with troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

Well, it shouldn't start with the belt removed unless you were manually activating the broken belt switch. Were you doing that?

Eric Yes, I did activate the switch. Sorry, I should have said that.

Well, it's hard to say. You say it rotates freely by hand but if you think it's the bearing locking up you could just replace it. It could also be a voltage drop problem due to faulty contacts in the start switch or motor switch but that requires some electrical troubleshooting to rule that out. Here's the link to the bearing kit. GE WE25X205 Drum Shaft and Bearing Kit - AppliancePartsPros.comEric
