Frigidaire washer - loud screeching noise at start of spin cycle

Hello, I have a Frigidaire washing machine model LWS9313DS0, approximately 9 years old. It has lately started making a very loud screeching noise at the start of the spin cycle. I replaced the snubber ring yesterday with no change in noise. The washer works fine otherwise, drains well and clothes are not excessively wet after the cycle. The noise is louder with a heavier load of clothes, such as blue jeans. It doesn't make any noise with an empty drum. The noise increases in volume for about 10 seconds, is steady for about 10 - 20 more seconds, then quits for the rest of the spin cycle. Any help or ideas are appreciated! Thank you, Jeff harris-jeff@hotmail.com

Noises are very difficult to diagnose from afar because we need to be there to hear them and try and determine an approximate location. Operate the machine with the front panel off and see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. And in a machine of this age it could be several things, but I would start by looking at the tub bearing, this part here. Part number: AP2131587

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I'm assuming it's safe to run the washing machine with the front panel off?
If so, I will try that, and see if I can isolate the source of the noise. I am not sure I'll be able to tell exactly where the noise is from, but I am sure I don't want to just start throwing expensive parts in an older appliance.
Thanks again, Jeff

You will not hurt anything operating it with the front panel off. And your thoughts of not sinking a lot of money into this model are good, a new basic top loader will serve you well.

Update:
I listened to the noise more closely, and noticed that it only happened at the start of the "power spin" cycle when whites were selected, and not in the other modes. It also only happened when the motor was straining to spin up the drum, and quit once the drum was up to speed.
I replaced the belt thinking it might have been slipping. The new belt didn't seem to be any smaller diameter than the old one, and the old one looked to be in good shape. I cleaned the pulleys as best I could with rubbing alcohol.
After replacing the belt, the screeching occurred twice more for a very short duration. Since then, no more screeching, even with a full load on whites. Hopefully it just needed a new belt and will keep working normally.
Jeff
