My Whirlpool model TEDS740PQ0 is not drying properly in the auto dry mode but works fine in timed mode. Could be the moisture sensor is clogged from dryer sheets or has failed. My problem is I can't find it and it does not seem to be identified on the Whirlpool parts diagrams.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same issue with my TEDS740PQ0 and I can't locate the moisture sensor.

This model doesn't use a moisture sensor. What is the problem with the dryer? Doesn't heat in auto dry? Timer doesn't advance in auto dry?

When set to auto-sense low heat it stopped half way. The next day, I did a load and it stopped after 5 minutes. I started it again and it stopped after 15. Started it again and it ran to completion. I'm pretty sure I've caught it and started it again within 10 minutes of it stopping.
So far I have done one load on timed-heat and it completed the cycle without issue. That is only high heat though, which I don't like to use.
If it doesn't use a moisture sensor, how does the auto-sense work?

Are you saying the dryer shuts off, or the timer stops advancing? If the dryer is shutting off only in auto dry cycle, it sounds like a bad timer.
The only difference between timed dry and auto dry is the way in which the timer is advanced. In timed dry it advances continuously. In auto dry, on your model, it only advances when the operating thermostat opens. The operating thermostat is located on the blower housing. During the first part of a cycle when the clothes are wet, most of the heat is absorbed by the clothing and not enough heat gets to the blower housing area to make the operating thermostat open and the timer does not advance. As the clothes begin to dry, less heat is absorbed by them and more heat makes it to the blower housing. Eventually, it gets hot enough in the blower housing to make the operating thermostat open. When that happens, the timer should begin to advance. The air temp will cool down, the thermostat will close again and timer stops advancing. Toward the end of auto cycle the timer actually switches back to timed dry (internally) and the timer will advance continuously until end of cycle regardless of the operating thermostat.
Dryers that use moisture sensors use the sensor to determine wetness of the clothing and advancing of the timer versus using the operating thermostat.

So you're saying there can be a case where the timer stops advancing, but the dryer continues to run; or that the dryer can shut off, but the timer continues to advance?
In my case, the dryer turns off and the timer stops.
Is there a way to test the timer? Is there anything else I should test? I plan to open everything up to see if it needs a cleaning. It's been a few years. I have a multimeter, but besides continuity, I don't know what I'm doing without someone giving me numbers.

Yes, in auto dry, the timer will start and stop advancing but dryer should tumble continuously. If your dryer runs normally in timed dry but is shutting off completely during auto dry, you need a new timer. I don't see what else it could be but if the new timer purchased from APP does not fix the problem, it can be returned. Whirlpool 8299778 Timer - AppliancePartsPros.comEric

I took the timer apart to see if I could find a problem. It's didn't look so simple as a washer timer I did before, and seemed like things could get out of whack easily. I closed it back up right away. Weird thing is that the dryer still works, but now the dial can be turned clockwise and counterclockwise, where before it could only be turned clockwise. I'm hoping that doesn't mean it is now unconnected from the motor gear and therefore won't advance. I'd like it to be usable while I wait for the new timer.

Timer still advances and is accurate on timed heat. I now remember that the dial used to turn both ways. Before I took it apart it would not, now it does again. Maybe something in there got stuck? I'm going to run a few test cycles on auto-sense before I order a new timer.

Tried some towels auto-sense low heat and it stopped after a few minutes. Got them damp again and put them on auto-sense high heat. No problem.
So all the cycles work fine, except for auto-sense low heat. Weird that just one out of four of the settings on the timer has a problem. Certainly seems like that's the only thing it could be though.
