I have a Maytag Gemini MER6550AAW electric stove with double oven.

Everything seems to be working except for the lower bake portion. The element does heat up, but sometimes it will max at 230ºF and sometimes it will go as high as 290ºF. It takes a very long time to heat to these temperatures and all during this time I can hear relays clicking on and off every 5-30 seconds.

Another thing from troubleshooting...the top oven's bake and broiler both work. The bottom oven's broiler works. But...if I turn on both oven's bake cycles at the same time, neither will work. Be advised, both ovens will broil properly at the same time.

I've read that it could be the lower bake element, the control board, relays, temperature switch, door switch, bad solder joints, and a few other things. I would like to try to repair it myself as I cannot afford a service call or a new oven.

I've been looking for a repair manual (I have an owner's manual) for this oven but I've been unable to find one. I own a multimeter (with alligator clip ends), and have advanced soldering skills if necessary, but no technical knowledge on using the meter for testing purposes.

For example to test the lower heating element, do I test ohms (i'm assuming when the oven is off), on the outside surface of element, or at it's wires, or maybe it needs to be totally removed from the circuit. Or do I test for 240 volts at the element's wires with the element still connected, or detached? That's the big issue...my ignorance. I can do the testing if I have some truly step by step guidance.

Don't know if this is related or not (I'm assuming it is totally unrelated), but a few weeks earlier, my wife says that she saw flames coming out of the stove's right rear coil burner's opening where the element connects to the clamp. I pulled it apart and looked inside and saw no evidence of any residual food or anything that might have caught fire. Th element was cleaned and reinserted and it has been working properly ever since.

The bottom oven's bake works.

Perhaps I missed something but the above parts of your post seem to contradict themselves.
Is the problem with the bake element in the upper oven?

This sort of points to a bad control board.

Only the broil element in the upper oven is thermally protected.
If the unit stays in pre-heat (never comes ready) then the temperature switch (oven sensor) is probably OK.
It will not be the door switch.

Safest way is to unplug the unit.
Pull the bake element into the oven compartment.
Be gentle you do not want to pull a wire off of it.
Measure it at the connections using resistance.
See page 5-3 in the manual for the expected resistance.

Sorry about that denman!!! I posted on two different repair forums hoping to double my chances at getting a reply. I found and fixed the error on the other forum but forgot to go back and fix it on this one. I just now corrected it.

You are entirely correct! I typed the wrong thing. The issue seems to be with the bottom oven and baking. The bottom BROILER works, but the BAKE element only partially works. Also, I was having an issue with the top oven baking(while the bottom oven was on), but now it seems to have gone away and the top oven is working properly all the time.

I have some new info as well:

I tripped and reset the double breaker in the electrical panel just for the heck of it, and tried some other things. Now, the bottom oven on bake won't go above 210ºF, but unlike before where I could not get both ovens to work concurrently when set to bake, the top oven bake is now working while the bottom one is switched on. The bottom one is sitting at 210ºF (and not wanting to go any higher or lower) and the top is baking at 350ºF as set, and the top heated up rapidly as expected.

Why at one point would neither work simultaneously, and then a few minutes later both would work (although the bottom oven wasn't going higher or lower than 210ºF)?

Can a heating element be "bad", but still work a bit? Is it all or nothing when it comes to elements?

Maybe a dumb question, but if only one leg of a dual leg circuit breaker was working, could this be the cause of the issue?

Sorry but I do not know.

Usually all or nothing. The one exception is where one of the feet has grounded out. In this case only part of the element will heat up (get red).

No because your other elements work OK.

Does the oven indicate that it is ready?
If yes then it could be a problem with the oven sensor.

If when you say "ready", do you mean a long beep that it makes when it reaches the desired temperature? If that is what you mean, then No, the bottom oven does not give me the ready beep, as it does not get to the desired temperature, and btw the element does not get red at all, although it does put out some heat.

I'll pull the element and check for 21 ohms. If that shows good, I'll probably pull the board and look for bad solder joints or anything that looks out of the ordinary.

Is there a solution? I replaced the lower heating element and that did not work.
