Dear Sirs,

Our dryer (Maytag-MDE5806AYW) started producing a smoky smell last night and I discovered that lint had gone through the heating duct (and heating elements) and collected on the screen going into the dryer drum. I took off the front of the drying thinking I could get to the screen but no luck. Here are my questions:

- Do I take off the drum assy to get to the heating duct or take off the outside cabinet?
- Also, does the air get pulled into the heating elements/duct from the void below the drum? (There was a lot of lint in the bottom of the dryer and I wonder will this problem happen again and what is causing the lint build up?)
- Should I replace some of the common parts that wear out while I am in there for major surgery? (Limit thermostat, fuse, cylinder roller, etc)
- How do I get the drum belt back on/off? Replace thermo, fuse, roller, etc.?

The manuals are not available so I need some directions.

Thank you, C Shirley (shirleyc)

Do not quite understand the above. The lint screen just inside the door should pull up and out for regular cleaning before every load.

See the manual

Yes
Check that the blower is sealed to the exhaust duct, it may be blowing lint into the machine instead of out the duct.

I would not bother with thermostats as long as the dryer is heating OK and is regulating properly at the different temperature settings.
I would check the belt, the rear rollers, the idler roller, the drum seals, the front glides etc.
Check the rollers for wear including the shafts and bearing slop.
Give the inside a good cleaning including the motor and blower wheel.
Also clean and check your vent system.

- How do I get the drum belt back on/off? Replace thermo, fuse, roller, etc.?
See the manual

Hope this helps!!

Denman,

Thank you! The manual will really help. Based on the answers to my questions I need to clean the "void" area really well make sure the duct is seated better and get to the heater duct and make sure that it is cleaned also before restarting. I will just take out the drum to get to all of this and then replace went done. I will check the other parts for wear.

Thank you for your help. C Shirley

Dear Sirs,

See the string below. Got rid of burnt lint but now the dryer will not heat.

All of this was pretty easy and went very well. Other than burned lint on the coils everything looked great inside. While I was in there I vacumed around everything including the motor, etc. It was all clean. I did not disconnect any electrical connects except the light switch and dampness bar connections. However, now when I turn it on it works fine except no heat at any setting. I rechecked all connections and ran the diagnostics and receive the following service codes: 22, 21 and 14- Dryness sensor- Selected dryer temp not reached- Heater on and drum temp not increasing.)I then talked to the local Maytag guys about what they thought it might be. No real help other than suggesting that when cleaning the motor I might have hit the "Red centerfuge switch". (???) I havn't checked this yet but is this a viable option to the dryer not heating if it did so perfectly before I took it apart to clean? Any other suggestions? I have an ohm meter and can check the other parts if you can suggest what might fail by the me just pulling things apart and cleaning out the lint? I will try most anything that you suggest.:o

Thank you in advance.

C Shirley

First turn the breaker off/on slowly.
Give it a try
If no heat
Then check for 240 volts at the plug. Sometimes half the line can drop out with no visual indication from the breaker.
If OK
Unplug the unit
Open up the console and check that a plug has not come loose on the control board. Would not hurt to disconnect/reconnect them just top be sure.
Plug it in and give it a try
If no heat
Unplug the unit
Check both the thermostats, both should be 0 ohms
Check the heater, should be around 10 ohms.
