Noticeable burning smell during agitation. Motor and lid switch were warm, almost hot. Spin cycle works fine. Checked the pump for obstructions - nothing, accomplished resistance checks on the motor and start switch - both okay. Removed agitator - nothing binding. Is it a transmission issue? If so, how can I properly diagnose it?
Thanks in advance for your advice...this has me stumped.

Pull the pump off the back of the motor and hand rotate the motor shaft in the CCW direction. This should be fairly easy to do and should cause the lower agitator to rotate back and forth. If good, then transmission is fine. The most likely problem is the fabric selector switch which is actually the motor speed switch. This is a 3 speed motor and the switch may be trying to energize more than one run winding at a time during agitation. Place timer in normal cycle one click before drain. This should cause agitation without any water in the tub and this part of the agitation cycle bypasses the speed switch and forces medium speed operation. If it seems to function fine there, then I would replace the speed switch. This type of problem can also be caused by a faulty timer but if you have no experience with electrical troubleshooting, then best to just parts swap. If purchased from APP, the parts can be returned.

I started the washer using the rotary switch, normal cycle, after the fill and before the drain/spin. I did it twice - no smell! I shall order and install the recommended part and post the results. Thank You! I had not even considered your solution!!

Took five minutes to install the part. So far so good! No burning smell. Thanks again for your help.
