Today my washer stopped agitating mid wash. It just sits and hums. I know that this is an old washer but before I go out and buy a new one I wanted to hear a second opinion. Is the transmission dead on this washer or is it possible that there is a much easier/cheaper fix than replacing the motor? Here is the sound being made by the washer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNmmR4MTEr8 It was short before it stopped making the noise. Not sure why it stops and starts. I think when it stops there is a ticking sound that indicates the timer progressing.

That's an old Whirlpool belt drive, at least 30 years old. Can't tell much from that video. Could just be something stuck in the drain pump. I'm assuming the motor just hums, belt doesn't move??? These are great old machines and it could be something simple. If your real handy with mechanics and such, I could provide assistance. Would be likely hard to find someone local who has much experience with these machines anymore.

That is correct, the belt doesn't move at all. I can also smell the motor heating up.
If there was something stuck in the drain pump wouldn't the belt still move, or at least twitch when the motor was turned on?

Can you rotate the pulleys and belt by hand? To check motor, loosen mounting bolts so you can rotate motor assembly to remove belt from motor pulley. See if motor will run without belt around motor pulley.

I can try later today to see if the motor will run without the belt, but the ease with which I was able to make the belt rotate makes me think it is not the belt holding the motor back.

In that case, sounds like it could be a faulty motor start switch, start capacitor or the motor itself. Start switch and motor windings can be tested with multimeter.
