Hello. For a while now my dishwasher has been having a mind of its own when it comes to selecting which cycle to run. I would try to select normal, the light would be lit for a split second, and it would switch itself to jet clean. It probably did this for a good 3 or 4 months.

Now when I try to select the cycle, any number of random things seem to happen, seemingly depending on which order i press the buttons.

If i was to try to select normal cycle, it will light for a second and switch over to rinse only.

If i select rinse only, and then press the same button again, it will select the light cycle.

If i select rinse only, and then press jet clean, it might or might not actually select and stay on jet clean.

The buttons for selecting the options such as steam sanitize and such also seem to either do nothing at all, or something completely random.

The start and cancel buttons are the only two that seem to be working normally.

Any help for diagnosing/fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a problem with the keypad itself, though I dont really know how to go about checking it.

Here are your parts
Parts for Maytag MDB7749SBB0 / Dishwasher - AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for the tech sheet.

Depends on what kind of control panel/keypad it has.
I am not sure what type it is.
I did find a picture of it on one site and it looked like a capacitive touch.
This keypad is like glass a gentle touch will activate a key.
Usually it will have a 4to 8 pin connection to the control board.

The other type is a bubble type keypad where you have to push the button in a little to activate the key.
Usually it will have a 12 to 16 pin connection to the control board.

The difference is as follows:

Capacitive Touch is an active device. In other words it has electronics on the keypad and talks to the control board using computer code.
This board can give the symptoms you describe.
Could be the control board but the keypad is more likely.

Bubble Keypad is a passive device. In other words there are no electronics on it. The output is just open or closed keys.
The symptoms you describe would probably be the control board not the keypad.
File Attachment(s):

Thank you for the response. My machine has the bubble touch keypad. I'll have a look over the tech sheet and see what I can figure out.

So it turns out that the problem was with the bubble touch keypad. The paper-thin little green wire that comes out of the back of it had rust across it which would explain the buttons selecting incorrect cycles or sometimes not working at all.

I've replace it now and everything is working fine but now I am wondering if there is something I can do to prevent the wire from corroding again. Is there something I can coat it with that will help seal out moisture but wont interfere or harm the cable? This rust problem seems to be a problem many other people have had with Maytag dishwashers lately and I'd like to avoid having to do this again in another 18 months.

Thank you for the help.
