Good morning: First, I have the front cover off to troubleshoot. I noticed that the unit had a bit of trouble starting to spin so I unplugged it, then checked the belt and motor by hand and got it to spin in both directions. Maybe spinning it by hand helped because I turned it back on and it spun.
I watched an entire cycle sitting on the floor with a flashlight, and here's what I noticed: In the final spin, the motor/belt was going faster. I assume this is normal, and it's a 2 speed motor? Anyway, I noticed it was slowly becoming slower, and slower, and then the burning smell. I unplugged it, got up close to the motor, and determined it to be the source of the smell (no smoke btw).
So that's where I am at, would appreciate your input.
Thx,
Tim

So, no problems during agitation cycle? Only spin? Check the condition of the lower transmission bearing. Use inspection mirror and flashlight for better view. If it looks rusty, gunked up, than that may be the problem. Water leaking from the tub seal goes right into that bearing. Feel the housing where the bearing is after spin. If it is too hot to touch, that bearing is failing or the brakes are not releasing all the way. This can be caused by the LGS spring at very bottom of transmission being broken or oil has leaked into it. Also could be the brake release cam mechanism grease has dried up or is gummed up and not allowing full release of the brake. See second photo. When going into spin, the cam dog should rotate around and make contact directly with the brake hub dog and a gap should open up between the cam and hub. If the dogs do not make contact during spin, then the brake is not fully releasing. You can rotate the motor pulley by hand in spin direction. The transmission should start rotating before the dogs contact each other. Eric

So I had some time to check, and yes, the topp get hot and it's very dirty. It also looks like the bearing (if that's what I am looking at) spins and stops intermittently. I guess the question is now what to replace/do?
Thank you very much, nice call.

I am able to replace the bearings. While it's apart, what other parts would you replace? Also, would you have a part number?
Thx,
Tim

By the way, it is agitating, plus the the cam dog touches the brake dog when spinning; however, the trannsmission does not move first at all when I do it by hand. One other question I am curious about on this topic is why this issues happens only on the super fast (for lack of a better description) final spin?
I really appreciate your help btw.

Ok, been away all day. So your saying it spins ok on low speed? Problem of slowing down only occurs in high speed? What about high speed agitation? Does the motor labor during that part of the cycle? You could also try running in high speed spin with belt removed to see if there may be a problem with the motor. Just loosen the four nuts securing the motor and slide it back a bit to remove the belt. You say that when you rotate motor pulley in spin direction by hand that the transmission does not rotate? It should fairly easily. You have to use two hands to keep it going because as soon as you let go the brake will stop the transmission from rotating.

Hey, thx...I actually went ahead and bought a new transmission given how hot to the touch the bearing area was. I will replace the seal too. Thx for your help. I'll report back to let you know if it does the trick--likely late tomorrow.
