Hi - The timer on my Kenmore 70 Series dryer is not advancing in the timed dry mode. It advances in the auto dry modes, but will not shut the dryer off. It just keeps running. The only mode that seems to work right is the air dry mode. I replaced the timer and the resistor already. Any ideas?

Usually, it's the other way around, timer advances in timed dry but not in auto dry. Sounds like you got another bad timer. With door closed, check for 120vac across the timer BK and WB terminals. If good and timer won't advance in timed dry, timer is faulty. If you don't read 120vac there, then you have an open neutral to the timer. Trace the white/black wire to find where it is connected into the neutral coming in to the dryer. Whirlpool 3976583 Timer - AppliancePartsPros.comEric

Thanks Eric. I checked and do have 120 vac across the timer. So maybe it's the timer. I literally just put it in. I replaced the resister 2 days after the timer. Do you think that would have done something to the timer if the resister was bad? Or is it fairly common to get a bad timer every once in a while? Just curious....

If the resistor was shorted or of lower than normal value, it could definitely damage the timer motor. In timed dry, the timer motor receives 120vac directly from L1 and neutral. In auto dry, 240vac is applied via L1 and L2 but the resistor is in series to drop the voltage down to 120. With a faulty resistor, the voltage can be too high and burn out the winding in the timer motor. Also not unheard of to receive another faulty timer so could be one or the other.
