I think I fixed it. I was going to take the actuator off anyway to go to a local appliance store tomorrow to compare to a new one (wife is getting impatient), so I looked at it again. I still couldn't see any wear, so I decided to bend it a little inward and now she catches!

But I still had some trouble getting the big gear to spin. I took it off and re-fit it 3 or 4 times. I looked underneath and I discovered on the bottom of the big gear is a plastic "C" shaped piece and a metal "C" ring. The lower right hand of this pic

Is the metal C supposed to be on the inside or the outside? It's hard to tell from the diagrams.

The metal cam spring goes on the outside of the cam.

Thank you, Eric. I thought as much. on mine the metal spring got pushed down (up, when the big gear's installed) and snapped onto the big gear itself and then the plastic cam got pushed over it.

I guess this happened during one of the many reinstallations of the big gear and I hope explains why it wasn't turning the spin gear.

I'm just reporting in that my washer is working again! I've run 3 empty test loads and 3 loads of clothing with no issues. And the original problem (clunking during spin cycle) hasn't reappeared.

So to recap:
-replaced the 2 parts of the agitator cam (and made sure they went on the right direction!)
-bent the actuator tang back in some
-replaced the "C" shaped clip onto the outside of the C cam on the underside of the big spin wheel

I appreciate all the replies, Eric. Thanks.

Glad to help out. Good job on persevering and getting it fixed. Your an expert on that transmission now.
