Well, I got the gearbox all apart, but I don't see anything obvious. The splines at the base of the shaft (where the gear with the 7 teeth goes over the shaft) may be a little worn.
The actuator cam pieces don't look worn that I can see. The tang doesn't look bent.
However, I did notice that once when I still had everything on the shaft, I was trying to turn the cams and see how it worked and everything turned somehow and there was no pressure on the spring at all. Then I moved it back and played with the cams and couldn't get it back to that loose state again. Not sure if that means anything or not.
So I guess I go ahead and get the cam kit?

To followup, I ordered the agitator cam kit. I replaced the pieces, put new gear oil in, new sealant material, got it all reassembled, and tested it.
Now it does not agitate or spin! Doh! The pump works, so it does drain. All I can think is that I installed something upside down?
I never separated the motor from the gearbox, so it shouldn't be the coupler?

Thinking about my problem, it must be stuck in neutral, right? So I must have gotten the neutral drain plate and its 3 widgets in wrong. *sigh*

The neutral drain mechanism only affects spin, it has no affect on agitation.

Hmm, I watched it go through all the cycles, and it does spin. Just doesn't agitate now.

Okay, I took it all apart again and discovered that the agitator cam follower and cam were upside down in this video: Gearcase how it works Whirlpool direct drive washer - YouTube I saw this mentioned in another thread on here. Unfortunately, he has youtube comments disabled. So I got it all back together and now it agitates & drains, but does not spin. Ugh, this would be comical if it wasn't such a PITA.

Well, I thought about asking if you went by that video but I gotta think that people would pay attention to how they take things apart and put them back the same way but... Other's have followed that video. I think I did send him an email a while back about it but never heard back.

I went to his website and sent a message. Doubt he'll change anything. Usually I do take pics as I take it apart. Lesson learned. At least double check the parts diagram!
As for the spin not working...
Anyway, I guess tonight I'll see if the clutch is spinning. Maybe I didn't line something up right while putting the gearbox back in? I thought I did, but hopefully I don't have to crack the transmission open again.

Okay, here is the latest on my situation. I took the motor and mount plate off the gearbox, opened it up, and drained the gear oil out. I got out my drill and chucked it to the gearbox input shaft. Spin cycle is working now when I turn the input shaft clockwise. But when I reverse the input, the left arm on the actuator doesn't push the outer cam part quite enough to collapse the cam and engage the agitate gear on the shaft spline. However, if I give the left arm a little pressure as it moves, it will push the cam all the way and the agitate gear engages. Then when I reverse it to spin cycle again, the right arm on the cam works and "spreads" the cam and disengages the agitate gear. But it seems the left arm is not working correctly. The agitate cam set is brand new, so I'm wondering if the old one being worn might have caused wear on the actuator? here's a vid I where I tried to show what's going on: Kenmore won't go back to agitate cycle - YouTube

Don't know really what to tell you. Can't troubleshoot it from here. Might be able to see better if you take the everything off but the actuator. Either the tang on the actuator isn't engaging the cam properly, or somethings up with the spring and clip that puts downward force on the agitate gear.
