I have an old (manuf. in either 79 or 89 according to serial#) Kenmore 70 Series washer. We got it as a hand-me-down in the late 90s. It still works great except for the following:
During the spin cycle, it sometimes starts to make a loud clunking or banging noise. When it does this, the agitator seems to freeze or stop for a second.
Here's the interesting thing though, it only does this on the 2nd consecutive load of washing. And when it does it, I just stop the cycle for 30mins to 1 hour and then continue it and it finishes fine.
The first load of the day, this usually doesn't happen. It seems to mostly happen after the machine is warm.
Ideas? My wife is wanting to get a new one, but I'm thinking I can fix it and get another 10 years out of it!

It's an 89. Post video to youtube showing inside of spinning tub when the noise occurs so we can see and hear.

I don't think the vid works.
The tub & agitator are spinning, then when the clunk happens, the agitator stops or freezes for an instant. The tub keeps spinning.

Appreciate the help. Could I just order the agitator cam kit? I'm comfortable doing stuff like this. Whirlpool 285206 Agitate Cam - AppliancePartsPros.comI guess I should take the transmission apart first to see if anything else is worn. Maybe the large plastic gear wheel? Anything else I should do while I'm in there? other than I just need some gear oil & gasket compound.

Yes, definitely repairable. I would take it all apart first before ordering any parts. It could be a bent tang on the shift actuator. The actuator moves the cam in one direction or the other depending on spin direction or agitation direction of main drive gear. If washer neutral drains ok and spins ok (other than agitator engaging) then everything else is good including the large plastic spin gear.
